Chapter 2 : Triage Unit – One Lacerated Finger

Got home from the day job to find out that Grant had lacerated his finger and was at the Accident & Emergency…

SHIT!   I got to there as quick as I could, to find Grant ‘checking in'.   We were told by the Triage Nurse that it would take anything up to 1 hour before he could see the on-duty Triage Doc – just so long as there were no traumas within that time…   He showed me the cut gouge – bloodied and open.     (I would say “fingers crossed” but that would be in poor taste… don't you think?)

We waited… and waited… and waited…   And chatted to a midget in a wheelchair – who claimed she had a fish bone stuck in her throat.   (Luckily for her, Kevin wasn't there!!)

Finally Grant was called through to see the Doc.

I, on the other hand, relocated myself to get a better view of the TV – to watch the fitba' (Greece vs. Czechoslovakia) amidst the walking wounded…

(14 mins later…)

Grant emerged – 5 soluble paper stitches.   Thankfully there was no damage to his nerves or tendons – or that would have been the end of his career as a bass player!   He was told 1 week's rest…   Stitches come out this week. Yay!   It is the middle finger of his left hand – swathed in a dressing, he has assumed the position of being permanently abusive this week – it looks like he's constantly giving everyone the bird…

It was an ugly and frayed moment, however – it could have been a lot worse…

And the moral of the story is:

“When using a Stanley blade to cut through cardboard tubing, cut AWAY from your fingers… “

Yours and relieved…
